It looks like Paramount is going to start out 2013 continuing a trend instead of starting a new one. 2012 saw audiences inundated from both the big and small screen with attempts to rewrite fairy tales. We’ve seen stories that we were told to put us to sleep as children reworked into TV episodes and movies that would give us nightmares as adults. And the beat goes on into January with this trailer, of course, with a twist.
This film doesn’t look like it’s going to waste too much time retelling us the story of Hansel & Gretel getting left in woods. It picks up years later, after their survival led them to a life of witch hunting and slaying. They get summoned to village that has had a recent rash of kidnappings that the parents believe are committed by witches. Hansel & Gretel soon realize they have something much more sinister on their hands and they’re in for the biggest fight of their lives.
The film looks beautiful from a stylistic standpoint and the fight scenes look like they are going to bring some ferocity and intensity, considering the trailer is a basically a montage of fight sequences. The plot may seem one dimensional, and almost vapid, but this may just be one of those action films that ends up being mindless fun given the source material.
