It looks like the action-comedy genre has become somewhat trendy in the past couple years, and who does it better than Bruce Willis? In fact, given Willis’s action pedigree and now over-the-hill age, he may actually have a cameo, if not a starring role, in the vast majority of tongue-in-cheek, funny action movies. This probably stems from the fact that he looks so comfortable in this type of role at this stage in his career. He looks like he genuinely has fun playing these parts, as well as being damn good at them. This is great news for fans of the man and the genre as summer 2013 is going see Bruce reprise his role as Frank Moses in Red 2.

Red 2 looks to pick up where the first left off, with a government agency putting out a hit on retired CIA agent Frank Moses. This time he gets the tip off from a friend in the business and his crew member from the first movie, played by Helen Mirren. Frank is enjoying retirement with his young girlfriend (Mary-Louise Parker) when he get approached by another friendly face, and resident panic-stricken-conspiracy-theorist, from his crew (John Malkovich). After getting the news of Moses being in danger, the motley crew is off once again on a mission to find out why someone wants Frank dead, and what his death is supposed to cover up.

If the style of this sequel is going to be anything like the first, we can expect a lot of intense gun fighting, high-powered explosions, and goofy humor about how old these operatives are peppered throughout it (which serve as not-so-subtle jokes as to how old the actors portraying them are). Throw in the likes of Catherine Zeta-Jones and Anthony Hopkins and you’ve got yourself a fully-stocked, All-star lineup to take pot shots at to keep the audience laughing between blowing things up.

As a fan of the original I’m glad to see a sequel is on its way to the big screen and, hopefully, it’ll pack as much laughter and as many punches as its predecessor did. With a cast like this, though, it’s hard to imagine them failing there.

Red 2 is scheduled for release on August 2nd, 2013.
